Here’s the scoop: these Manila X-Mas albums are filled with favorite non-traditional wintry holiday songs I’ve collected over the years. There’s a new mix for 2009 along with a reissue of the original 2003 and 2007 albums for those who don’t already have them. Each album is roughly an hour long and 100MB in size, and for the most part they’re family-friendly fare. But like life itself there are occasional swear words and adult themes, so if you’ve got kids you might want to take a preview listen first…and go ahead and just toss the last track on each disc. They put the blue in Blue Christmas.

In the way back, I used to distribute these as CDs. My, the times they have changed. If you’d still like a custom manila CD folder like the one below just hit me!

The file download links for each album are just below the track listings, and of course all songs are © 1965-2009 Somebody Else. Here’s hoping they’re hip to the spirit of the season.

These print ads are the smallest pieces in the 2005 WFF collection, but without question they pack some of the largest visual impact. Lacking the found imagery of the other campaign pieces–newsprint does not lend itself to the intricate collages–these rely on headlines alone and feature some of the sharpest copy writing in the campaign. The two nude bodies ad was even deemed too risqué for some publications.

Keeping with the visual theme established by the Ian’s Welcome Week t-shirts: More Cooper Black. It’s fun, familiar and easily legible at a distance. Coupled with some sharp jabs at freshman predictability, these storefront posters are perfect for luring wide-eyed (and pie-eyed) students to Ian’s.

The graphic design community can tend toward the skeptical at times, so marketing to it can be a difficult task. This illustration for the back of the accordian-fold Design Madison Brochure is a collage of dozens of photographs taken on the 6th Floor of Humanities at UW-Madison–the home to quite a few soon-to-be-skeptical young graphic designers. The first panel is itself a verbal collage of quotes from each of the event speakers for the year. The piece helped bring in a lot of new faces to DM, and the season was a hit.

Cooper Black: Serving up t-shirt chic for over forty years. Cheapshot headlines in a cheapshot typeface, but that’s the point of the free Welcome Week tees destined to adorn the UW student body for months to come. The “mac”–for the uninitiated–refers to Ian’s famous Mac and Cheese slice. Seriously? It rules. The last two shirts are nods to UW Badger fans and their…way with words. Enjoy.

Identity for Relentless Skateworks and its sister company, Subversive Skateworks. An interesting exercise in pushing the limits of what is and what is not branding in a product category that has been blurring that line for a quarter century. A handful of the stream-of-consciousness design studies for this project constitute some of my favorite work as a graphic designer.

Found photography and stream-of-consciousness collage copywriting form the basis for the 2005 WFF campaign, and the promo posters as the marquee piece. Inspiration comes from everywhere (including mom’s old photo albums) and reflects the thematic–at times chaotic–diversity of the Festival’s film lineup. The posters promote the Festival by poking fun at it–the film titles are fictitious, and the stars range from family (mom looks good in hot pink) to pets to an unnamed Milwaukee Brewer whose snapshot I found lying on my street. One of Harvey’s Wallbangers, no doubt.
